Talsen, a London-based insurance business was replacing expensive, highly complex legacy software. They wanted something modern with an intuitive user interface that would allow new members of their Operations and Underwriting Management teams to get productive immediately without lengthy training. To reduce cost, increase agility and fulfill robust security requirements, the company chose to build the new system – project named Newvie – within a secure browser interface. Development was done in-house by the group’s specialist development company. Deadlines were aggressive and the development budget tight. The business brought Hey!Fugu in to assist with wireframes and mockups that could be tested with users and provide unambiguous specifications for developers.
We jumped in and began working with Talsen’s business analyst to mockup screens. The clickable, prototype screens were shown to users to test assumptions and validate the data the system team thought the business team needed.
The legacy system displayed huge quantities of information on each screen, creating a sense of overwhelm and clutter for the user. The mock-ups proved highly effective in enabling business and systems teams to collaborate in designing a system that was easy to use and gave the users the streamlined data that they needed to see, when they needed to see it. The client particularly valued our fast turnaround where feedback from users and developers was rapidly incorporated. This quick turnaround maintained momentum and avoided the potential miscommunication that so often occurs between software development and business teams.
The client credits Hey!Fugu’s contribution of the clickable prototypes and the related user-engagement coordination as a key ingredient in the success of this project which went live within deadline at a fraction of the cost of the alternatives. The user experience of the interface was so enjoyed by the business teams that it is forming the basis of another new system Talsen is building. We continue to work with Talsen on Newvie as new functionality is added and opportunities arise to iterate and enhance the experience for Newvie’s users.

If you’ve ever been to a dinner with friends and gone through the tedious task of trying to split the bill, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about – why should a lovely evening end with the boring, prickly task of splitting the bill when we have such powerful computers in the palm of our hands!
Currently in development, working with code from the boys at Cawe Technologies, “Bill Buddy” turns an arduous task into an artful one as friends can take a picture of their restaurant bill, agree on the tip percentage and easily organise the totals of who owes what, without any waiters unfairly missing out on their tip or friendships souring over an un-claimed margarita.
Available on the Play store and on the Apple store – we can’t wait to help you end your evening with good vibes, good wine and a bill splitting process that actually works.

Devson, one of our partner development companies, was building a legal app that offers users an easy, cost effective process for South Africans to complete antenuptial contracts and uncontested divorce agreements. Their goal was to take the sting out of the typically painful and pricey process, and offer up an alternative route for those looking for a fuss free legal avenue. Devson approached Hey!Fugu looking for UX design that would create the best user journey and visual backdrop for the app.
The Hey!Fugu team started by creating a brand archetype for LEAPP, as well as the personas of its key users. We imagined a user who would benefit from a wise helping hand and a simplified step-by-step legal roadmap. We began with an approach of designing an interface that felt like a clever friend –accessible and friendly but knowledgeable enough to depend on as a trustworthy and reliable source of knowledge.
Our biggest design challenge was the simplification of complex legal terms into something more digestible to the average user. Working very closely with the LEAPP lawyers to achieve our goal, we built multiple design variations of the interface – evolving the design with each new attempt to make the legal processes easier to understand, and swifter to complete. With our design thinking process of “iterate, test, iterate, test” we created the streamlined LEAPP user journey and contemporary visual.
LEAPP is currently in its testing phase and is almost ready to be released into the wild. Watch this space for a release date and let us know what you think!
